The Difference Between QLED and OLED

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) shares some similarities with QLED in certain aspects, as it also utilizes LED screens. However, their internal structures differ: QLED TVs employ quantum dots illuminated by an LED panel, while OLED TVs consist of millions of individual organic light-emitting diodes.

What is QLED?


Simply put, QLED TVs are a type of LED TV (not to be confused with OLED TVs). They employ quantum dot technology to enhance key aspects of image display, offering improved brightness and a wider color spectrum. This is because when applied to LED backlights, these quantum dots act almost like filters, producing purer light than LEDs alone.


QLED is not a self-emissive screen technology, as the quantum dots themselves do not directly emit the colors you see. Instead, they are dispersed across a film layer that acts as a color filter.


When the screen is on, the LED backlight illuminates this film layer, refining the light to achieve the desired color temperature. However, since QLED is not self-emissive, the LED backlight illuminating the screen remains constantly active. This means it struggles to deliver the same level of pure black as OLED.


What is OLED?


OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. OLED TVs consist of millions of OLEDs forming individual pixels, each illuminating independently when energized, making it a self-emissive display.


For this reason, when an individual OLED pixel isn't energized, it turns off completely, appearing as true black—just like a TV turned off—enabling the display of purer blacks. While QLED TVs can be made thin, OLED TVs can be made thinner. Additionally, manufacturing flexible OLED screens is easier.

So which is superior, QLED or OLED? Below is a detailed comparison across brightness, contrast, viewing angles, and other aspects.


Black Display Capability


A display's ability to show black is arguably one of the most critical factors for achieving superior image quality. Purer blacks yield higher contrast and richer colors. In displaying the purest black, OLED is the undisputed champion.


If an OLED TV pixel isn't energized, it emits no light whatsoever, displaying true black.


QLED TVs, however, utilize LED backlighting behind a quantum dot layer to achieve higher brightness and a wider color spectrum. Software is employed to dim pixels that don't need to be illuminated. This approach triggers an issue known as “light leakage,” where light spills into areas that should display black. This leakage is detectable to the human eye and can negatively impact the viewing experience to some degree.


Samsung is investing significant time and resources to enhance QLED TVs' black display capabilities, introducing a new anti-reflective layer technology claimed to improve this issue. This is expected to narrow the gap between QLED and OLED in achieving true black. However, for now, OLED remains the undisputed champion in displaying black.

Brightness


As Samsung promotes, QLED TVs hold a significant advantage in brightness. This isn't solely software-driven; it primarily stems from quantum dots achieving brighter hues across the spectrum without sacrificing saturation. This proves especially crucial in rooms with substantial ambient light.


QLED TVs are also considered better suited for HDR content, as spectral highlights—like glistening lake surfaces or car paint reflections—appear brighter and more vivid. However, this point is somewhat controversial, with some arguing that OLED's pure blacks offer a superior HDR experience.

Color Gamut


OLED once dominated this category, but Samsung claims that quantum dots in QLED TVs enhance color accuracy, brightness, and color volume, delivering wider, more saturated hues at extreme brightness levels.


While QLED undeniably delivers outstanding color reproduction, the enhanced saturation at high brightness levels offers limited practical advantage during typical viewing, resulting in a draw for this category.

Response Time and Input Lag


Response time refers to how quickly each diode switches from “on” to “off.” Faster response times reduce motion blur and artifacts. As you likely know, OLED TVs contain millions of individual diodes, each capable of switching independently.


In QLED TVs, diodes are arranged in clusters that emit light together, preventing individual switching. This results in overall slower transitions between “on” and “off” states. In summary, OLED currently boasts the fastest response time among all TV technologies, making it the clear winner in this category and more suitable for gaming and sports viewing.

Viewing Angles


OLED emerges victorious once again. QLED screens deliver optimal viewing directly from the center; color accuracy, contrast, and image quality progressively degrade as viewing angles widen. While severity varies between models, the difference remains perceptible to users.


OLED screens maintain brightness without degradation at viewing angles up to 84 degrees. While some QLED TVs have improved their viewing angles, OLED still holds a clear advantage. Therefore, if wide viewing angles are a priority for you, an OLED TV is the better choice.

Size


OLED has made significant strides in this area. When the technology was in its infancy, the maximum size for OLED screens was 55 inches. Today, 88-inch OLED TVs are readily available.


Regarding size, QLED displays face virtually no limitations, with some models reaching 100 inches or larger.

Burn-in


When static images remain displayed for extended periods, they can leave a “ghost image” on the screen. The term “burn-in” is somewhat inaccurate; it actually refers to a degradation in display performance. Prolonged use of a single pixel causes it to age prematurely and dim, creating a darker impression when contrasted with surrounding pixels.


For most users, this issue has minimal impact. If forced to declare a winner, QLED emerges victorious, exhibiting greater resistance to aging.

Power Consumption


OLED panels are extremely thin and require no backlighting. Consequently, OLED TVs are often lighter than QLED models and consume less power, offering higher efficiency.

Price


Once a clear QLED victory, OLED prices have dropped significantly. Since we're discussing premium models here, comparable QLED TVs now cost roughly the same as OLEDs. Therefore, this categoryis a tie.


Summary:


QLED holds advantages in brightness, screen size, and lifespan. Recent technological advancements have also improved its black levels and viewing angles. QLED TVs deliver superior daytime viewing and offer better value for money.


However, in terms of picture quality, OLED is the winner. OLED TVs deliver superior viewing angles, purer black levels, and better contrast. They are also lighter, thinner, consume less power, and offer superior nighttime viewing.
